I wonder if you are relying on secondary groups?
If you are, using
service imap {
extra_groups = somegroup
}
can help.
Also you could try
service imap {
executable = /usr/bin/strace -o /tmp/imap -f -ff /usr/lib/dovecot/imap
}
might be useful
