Let me clarify the issue that Nikolai was describing.
We're running dovecot 1.1.11 and solr 1.4.
The issue is quite simple.

If you want to sniff the connection, you can better use the rawlog utility,
which works with TLS as well. See the wiki page Rawlog for more info.
