I normally need the firmware for Broadcom network cards and don’t have
problems copying it via USB stick.
But it is still non-free firmware and so should be restricted to a bare
minimum.

seen these race conditions more than once.
So it is a good idea to use names that the kernel is not using.

include all key drivers including those t

So if your rootfs is an iSCSI volume you would need the firmware.
Besides that I don’t know any „normal” SATA/SAS controller requiring
