Talking about security and ttys and login:
I would like Devuan to have a clear documentation and good defaults for
the Secure Attention Key (SAK).
E.g. that any user at the console can expect to do Ctrl-Alt-SysRq-K to
work.
Too few people know that this even exists in Linux.

Hi,
Jude Nelson posted an enormous rdepends list, of what packages would
need to be changed for Devuan Jessie, but from my own experimentation I
concluded that it wasn't so bad if we are willing to give up on a few
other things:
- Give up on GNOME for the moment
- Accept that a few key packa
About that error with the mdev packaging:
if you purge udev, does that mean you need the old-fashioned
/dev/MAKEDEV script back to create the device nodes?
it's in Debian package makedev. and it says Conflicts: udev, but that
doesn't mean it gets re-installed automagically after udev is purge
Well, I have an idea for a discussion about "re-architecting" Linux,
however it is very likely that this is just my lack of understanding
speaking:
I am aware that task #1 is providing Devuan Jessie (without systemd),
and that is already enough work.
Personally I consider task #2 to do a lit
Hej,
I just wanted to mention that I got an experimental Devuan jessie
live-build to work with LXDE and lightdm and iceweasel.
And amprolla seems to have lost the Contents-amd64.gz file so I had to
make one.
The only systemd components are udev and libudev1 (215-17+deb8u2)
There's an annoy
Hello,
I would like to clarify some things about the live DVD that I made:
- arch is amd64, userid user password live. It works inside virtualbox,
not tested on bare iron. Do sudo bash to work as root.
- It was an experiment by me to learn live-build and see how far I could
get with it on De
First, about fsmithred from refracta: I simply wasn't aware that
somebody had already done this. Sorry fsmithred. I don't keep good track
of the developments.
Is there something like these newfangled "web sites" where I could read
the latest news? And I don't mean git.devuan.org/packages-base
Hi Aitor,
You can skip the user's password:
Add to 'live-config' a file '/etc/config/config.conf' containig, for
example:
LIVE_HOSTNAME=devuan
LIVE_USERNAME=user
LIVE_USER_FULLNAME="User"
LIVE_USER_DEFAULT_GROUPS="cdrom floppy audio dip video plugdev

Hi,
a short update: Now I added the debian-installer component to my
experimental live DVD, and I can try to do an installation, but it
screws up in "installing the base system"

Yes, the e-mail header may be a bit cryptic. apologies.
Has anyone done a "debootstrap exclude option" on the pkgdetails.c
program in base-installer yet?
Please note, that this is a request for information, not an accusation

Thanks for documenting that Aitor!
It's all a lot of work.
Let's shout a heartfelt "thank you" to Daniel Baumann and his live-build
companions who automated this difficult set of tasks considerably :-)
A small tip I learned only recently, for experimenting with chroot
jails:

Which repo did you use to make the dvd?

If your programs depend on CDE, you could try to compile them against
lesstif2,
that's an LGPL implementation of Motif, on top of just the X libraries.
I don't know if it's binary-compatible or if it's actively maintained.

And why actually there is no package for it in repository?

Congratulations, everyone!!

Hi,
I just noticed that SubSentient has started a discussion on SoylentNews
about init systems:
https://soylentnews.org/article.pl?sid=16/06/01/0347232
Ask SN: Help Write it — What do you Want in an Init System?
I thought you might find it interesting.
