Well I figure it out the issue, when you use
django.contrib.auth.views.login,
the destination template ("registration/login.html" or whatever you
use) has
to invoke the form wrapper with the name "form" e.g.
"{{ form.username}}"
this is mandatory, I was trying to use another convenient name.
