This is a feature, as far as Gmail is concerned. Firstnamelastname, firstname.lastname, and fir.stna.me.l.a.s.t.na.me are all the same – they implicitly strip periods from their addresses. You can use this for things like subtle sender tracking (put the period in different places for different
