I was recently trying to run Signal, the encrypted messaging system. At
signal.org, they do offer a download of what's called "Signal Desktop", but in
the fine print they say it won't work unless you also install the app on "your
phone". In my case, I don't have an evilphone, so I gather I can
Signal requires a mobile number for the initial account generation.
Once you have that, there is a Linux client that can be attached to the
account.

I did download what I think is the Linux client you refer to -- on signal.org,
they call it Signal Desktop. But when I run that client, it simply shows a QR
code and tells me to scan it with my phone (I don't have a phone that accepts
QR codes). There seems to be no way on this Signal Desktop
