For the sake of completeness, I want to add mention of the HP X-series
office ink jet printers to this thread, seeing as no one bought them up.
The innovation they bring to the table is a print head that is a full
page width (almost, 8.17"), so it can achieve speeds comparable to laser
printers. T
I don't like ePrint. I don't mind AirPrint. At least with AirPrint you
need to be on the local LAN.

One advantage of this (and other new printers) is that it uses HP ePrint
so I can print from my phone or tablet. But, as previously mentioned,
there are security issues with WiFi, and I assume with print services
from vendors like HP. Other vendors, like Epson have similar remote
services.

I bought an HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 2 years ago. It is a multi-function
with a duplexer. I prefer it to the older HP laser printers. I don't do
heavy doc printing, but I have had very few problems with it. It has a
sheet feeder for fax and scanning. While I have had a jam, it was very
easy to clear.
The wifi settings and security on most printers is very poor. Having
it turned on gives you an easy access point to break in.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback on your experiences with color laser
printers. Some follow-up comments below.

We acquired a Xerox Phaser 6600DN. It's rather large in physical size,
but it was relatively low cost and the toner cartridges can be replaced
separately and last a while. We've loved it so far. Had it a year or
more already and still working with the toner it shipped with, although

I swear by my Ricoh Aficio SP C410DN. Drivers for Linux/Windows/Mac work
easily, the thing is built like a tank, and each toner color has two separate
elements: one is a bottle of powder rated for 15,000 pages, and the other is
the roller mechanism rated for at least 3x as long. I get hardcopy f

This is the same symptom that eventually did in my 2605DN. The red

Lat printer I bought for home use was a LaserJet 4000, back in 1998. Never
had a problem with it once I upgraded it with a JetDirect card I got on
eBay; it still works great today.
I remember others on the list over the years assert that HP's printer
quality seriously degraded in the early 2000's.

Same exact model here. Bought when it was on sale so not absurd to have

I've had good luck with HP color lasers. My previous one, a LaserJet
2605dn, lasted for 7 years without a repair. Just a few weeks ago, I
replaced it with a LaserJet M451dn for about $350. The output is quick
and gorgeous, with automatic duplex. Works on Ubuntu 14, Windows 7,
Windows XP, and Mac OS

I have an old Samsung CLP-300 series color laser. It isn't as rugged as my
older HP Laserjet P, but it is color.
The only maintenance I have done after 8 years is replace the toner cart's.
I even use no-name replacement toner.
There are 4 cart's, and the black is larger than the rest. There is

Color lasers are more mechanically complex than mono; they break
more often and in stranger ways. The color toners last for a
