I want some big brackets (as in very tall { and } characters), can
anyone suggest a way to draw them easily? It's basically a long line
with a collection of quarter circles attached so I guess I could do it
that way but it feels a bit clumsy.

selectively scales vertically but only the line's length, not their width,

I have had similar problems, but I can't remember details. Basically, the
view does not always represent what will print. Definitely, Win7 has been
better than Win NT or XP. I rarely have printing difficulties.

I have a moderately complex diagram describing the connections on a
multiway plug.
There are texts labelling the various connections and wires. Most of
them print correctly but some labels are mis-formatted:-
Yellow - The Y prints over the e and the label is shifted to the right
