Prerelease 1 of 0.96

I'm uploading 0.96-pre1 as I write. It may be slightly rushed out the door, but I'm not sure of my ability to hack over the next three weeks, and I didn't want more delays. If nothing serious turns up within the next three weeks, 0.96 will be out about a week into the new year -- unless I get goo
