Is there a way to join two segments so that they behave as a polygonal line?
Is it possible to do the same with a line segment and a bezier curve?

I found out that changing the "persistence" file did the trick, not the
"defaults.dia". Is that the right way to handle this setting?

The image export seems to only handle 1 size.
I have shrunk down the UML doc to fit on one page, prints fine, but
when I export to PNG, JPG, etc...it's incredible tiny.

(which is not typical), however when I open the .png file, text does
not show up.
