Diagrams aren't text documents. I can't imagine editing, say, an audio

On Windows, try exporting as .emf format (but not Cairo .emf). You can
drop this into a Word document and resize it as required, since it's a
vector representation, not pixel-based.

Would exporting as an SVG image work for you? Dia can do this.
SVG is a widely supported image format which is not bound to a resolution and
can be embedded in text documents.
