and metadata from a 2.22 DHIS2 server, we're getting an OutOfMemory
exception, that seems to come from the following api call

Did you get the log messages you were looking for? Depends on your use
case, but I think activating the debugging mode in your phone and using ADB
is probably the best way. You can get ADB or install Android Studio, so you
would also get other things like memory, CPU or network usage grap
