Sounds similar to having newest xorg release built with defaults and hald not
runnign. Is mplayer killing hald? Anyway, new xorg is not sane.

Well, you can do the killall on the same computer, no need to ssh via
another one. It doesn't solve the problem but it spares you the use of
another computer.

Why not just use mk and be done with it? All the time wasted
struggling with makefiles could be spent in more productive things,
and it would help spread mk, which would be a very good thing.
