I'm going to trace the changes through the code and examine the DB
before I try to comment any further.
I certainly don't want to depend on a new editor - I just want to
understand exactly how it works with the present editor

I understand 'incomplete' means the same as 'normal' except that the
node's children are not (known to be) all present and complete.
