pin-externals branch: call for review

Hi, I'm almost done with the pin-externals branch. At least I can't think of much else that needs doing right now, apart from removing SVN_DBG() calls. But I probably haven't thought of everything. There are likely some more scenarios that could use testing. I'd be happy to hear your ideas. The
