Spam on phpBB is an ongoing problem.
Signature checking process avoids automatic registration from spambots.
Unfortunately, it cannot be effective in all cases.
Certainly a real human here.
Moderate is the good solution :-)

fault was hacked.
This has never happened before. I hope it is not due to recent updates.

You could send a mass e-mail to all users (ACP > SYSTEM > General Tasks > Mass
e-mail)
