Just keep in mind that there is no support for partial
checkouts in git so it’s not all roses and unicorns for
a project like this to switch from svn to git.

Historically JIRA filled a niche within the Java world
at Apache because they are VERY parochial about their
toolchain and do not give a damned about basing their tech on
open source software. In other words, I would think twice
about switching just because JIRA is more popular at Apache.
