We rely on various features of XHTML being parsable as XML, so HTML 5 as a
default would be a real problem.
HTML 5 is not a document format, it is a browser feature/compatibility
guideline (IMO).

thinking about setting up a wiki with multimedia content, I came across the
fact that JSPWiki is delivering pages as XHTML 1.0 strict. Unfortunately, this
means that it's not easily possible to write a plugin using new HTML5 features
like or tags.
What about changing the document type
