I agree that email can get overwhelming but every other solution has so far
failed to meet it's "search-ability" and ease of use (IMHO). There was a
glimmer of hope once in google (now Apache) wave. That would appear to have
been the solution that Kay (and many more of us) would have liked

I second Bertrand. Just elect them as committers. Whether it is code,
documentation or answering questions, everything is a "commitment" and
of equal value. That's the way we see it in Apache Taverna.

I guess it would be possible to run hyperkitty alongside the current
mailman ui so that those who want the old views can still get it.
I don't think there should be an issue running gpl3 software on the Apache
infrastructure. It's just off the shelf software, shouldn't be a problem.
