Checked 1.5, 1.6 mvn build, sigs (using key from KEYS), hashes (only

Hi,
If anyone has any advice on how I can improve the patch I submitted
for CODEC-89, or perhaps I can improve on Sebb's patch, I am more than
happy to try.
