So I am just trying to figure out how to populate VMs with CLoudstack, whilst
using pfSense.

Recent FreeBSD has proper support for Xen HVM and KVM VirtIO therefore it runs
nicely, not sure how old PfSense is though.
You run it on Xen or Xenserver now?
