The current (old-ish) status of #9608 requires to be built on Java 8,
but runs on both Java 8 and Java 9 (and should on 10). It comes with the
inconvenience that there are two (new) jvm.options files for the
specifics of 8 and 9. This was done to make it a no-brainer to start in
