In general I like the milestone planning idea and I would be very much in
favor of trying it.
I think the biggest challenge is likely to be finding the time and capacity
to keep it up to date and doing the ticket grooming required for project
management.

I've started experimenting with GitHub milestones in the DataFusion
project. I find it helpful to have a prioritized list of issues that I am
working on for the next release, and the milestone description can be used
as a way of communicating our roadmap rather than maintaining a separate
document
