I have confirmed that a full installation of 12.04 on a laptop (not just a live cd) also works fine with this headset. So I am baffled how to find out what is causing the issue on my specific machine/install. It may just be a waste of everyone's time to try and debug this issue but as a dev I hate

I ran 'sudo update-usbids' and rebooted and tried different ports usb3 and usb2, I can't detect a difference in behaviour. Note it is listed as Bus 003 Dev 002 via lsusb but this was the case prior to update-usbids too. Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
