Check your boot messages with "journalctl -k" and your

On current Ubuntu versions there is no need for an xorg.conf, only if
you need to tune some specific parameters. No fiddling around with "sudo
Xorg-configure" needed.

Machine used is a PowerMac G5 7,3 with an AGP Radeon 9600 Pro (Mac

I can not trigger this bug on my PowerBook 5,6. I get the same "libGL
error: failed to load driver: r300"-errors, but the mpeg2 video I tested
is played with default settings (video output set so automatic).
You can check which output modules are availabe on your machine with
"vlc -l | grep -i vid
Just reckognized that this but is not about output modules but
Input/Codec... Sorry, my fault!
But nevertheless my machine plays mpeg2 files with Input/Codec
Decode=Auto just fine.
