between keyboard layouts and IMs, we can try disabling IBus' input
method switching under Unity.

Yes, Lorenzo, you're correct. The problem is due to Compiz/Unity
fighting with gnome-settings-daemon over passive key grabs, but fixes
have been committed but not yet released. This PPA contains those fixes:

Ok, I did as Sebastien suggested and uploaded to the PPA gnome-settings-
daemon which will do those changes only under Unity. The build should
finish soon.

It's probably an upstream bug since it doesn't play nice with gnome-
accessibility-themes' High Contrast theme either. But at least we can
apply the MP to ubuntu-themes to make it work.
