I have stopped using the AMD driver and I am using the free driver now.
I have not seen this for a long time now even before I have changed the
driver. I think it might have been fixed or masked after the initial
unstability after Ubuntu upgrade.

I have not seen the problem since for a while now. I suspect it has been
caused by pango-graphite problems I have also been experiencing. After
deinstalling pang-graphite (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1166125), I
have not seen this proble again.
