I haven't extensivly tested it, but it does behave normally so far. I
am able to login as I was before with the workaround. My change of the
tag was only to reflect the expired password issue not being fixed.
I am fully in favour of having the KDE logo appear properly :)

I think I've been able to get pam_krb5 to ask for the new password
properly by using the "defer_pwchange" option which moves asking for the
replacement password from pam_authenticate() to pam_acct_mgmt(). See
the man page for pam_krb5. However, the solution isn't perfect based on
this note from t
lightdm-gtk-greeter appears to set the language properly since the
introduction of accountsservice 0.6.15-2ubuntu9.4 (LP: #1018621). It
however does not restore the previously selected language when the user
logs in, giving them the system default, but that is a different issue.

Yes, the user's don't have a .profile.
I may have solved the other issue... If I comment out "LANG=" in
/etc/default/locale, it works as expected, though I don't believe I
should have to do this. That file seems to override the
~/.pam_environment settings.
