The app itself does not crash, and the close/minimize/maximize buttons
reappear when switching to a different setting like "Appearance".

I did a fresh install of Ubuntu Desktop 23.04 (the light version, with few
pre-installed programs), during installation I selected Dark Theme, then
installed gedit with APT.

For what it's worth, I'm seeing the same behavior as the original post.
MacOS 13.5.1. RDP-ing via MS Remote Desktop App (stable or beta
versions) in to Ubuntu Mantic presents the same as mentioned. Same TCP
response. Not clear if it's Ubuntu RDP or something else happening along
the chain.

That's tens of gigabytes of pixmap memory so there's a major leak.
Let's say this is definitely a bug in Chromium, but arguably a bug in
Xorg for not responding while it frees the massive amount of leaked
memory.

The windows for a number of apps e.g. Firefox or libreoffice etc freeze
momentarily and displays a message saying either click to wait or click
to force click the app which is not responding. After waiting a few
seconds the app becomes responsive again and

occupying around 100MB of memory although the largest one is 600MB. So
please consider closing tabs to get some system performance back.
