since pressing the Super key generates windows previews the memory usage

I was running into the same issue after the latest upgrade of 17.10 and
libreoffice, and I tried a couple of things that have both failed. I
have my libreoffice files sitting on FAT filesystem that I mount in
fstab. Earlier I was mounting it at /data which I changed to /mnt/data.

When comparing the memory occupation numbers in the Chromium task

reinstalled it, and the graphics are fine now. It looks like this was
indeed due to a timing problem between when my system got the gcc update
and the kernel update.
It appears that I'll have to reinstall virtualbox as well.
This still is a problem, even on Ubuntu 17.10 under some (unknown)
conditions. Mine used to work with my current mouse, but I went to
adjust it today, and it's not there. I have no touchpad, only a mouse;
it's a desktop machine.

installation (an upgrade I got from the ubuntu-toolchain-r ppa, which I
used in order to test something with gcc-7).
I use Timeshift, so I was able to go back to before adding the ppa.
