information that You collected (and that I couldn't even imagine of),

1) I created a /etc/udev/hwdb.d/brother4.hwdb file with the lines

To be precise: "v049f is vendor ID, and p035d is product ID" should read
"049f is vendor ID, and 035d is product ID", as in usb:vp, where

For me, this was caused by my custom .desktop file. I downloaded
Firefox, unpacked it to my home and created a .desktop file for it in
~/.local/share/applicaitons as so:

I did what Tim suggested on a fresh install of Ubuntu 17.10 nut it
doesn’t work on my laptop with GeForce GTX 1060. Still boots to a black
screen. Booting with HDMI cable connected however, does work fine.
Optimus is not available in NVIDIA settings. Is this a different bug?

Double checked, brscan4 symlinks required! To sum it up:
a) install libsane-extras
b) install brscan4
c) 'sudo ln -sfr /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-brother*
