Every time I boot or resume my machine at the office, where there is a
WPA network, I am prompted for the authentication details and forced to
connect manually. The username and password are automatically filled in
from the last successful attempt, and clicking 'connect' is su

state changed when NM sends wifi-enabled signal, but also when wifi

Perhaps I spoke too soon. After rebooting I lost sound completely again.

You should report this as a bug against the kernel at
bugzilla.kernel.org. The laptop lacks energy_* information.
