The fix for me was opening, unchecking the Index box in Preferences,
closing, reopening, rechecking the index option and giving it a few
minutes to index.

Dean's post above did fix this stupid issue for me on Ubuntu. The
global-messages-db.sqlite is located in ~/.thunderbird/[accountfolder]
where [accountfolder] for me is some hashed string followed by
".default". I quit Thunderbird, deleted that file (making a copy in
case), and restarted Thunderbir
I was having this issue too. After some searching I found this post
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=1805615.
The fix was to browse to your profile folder and remove the file global-
messages-db.sqlite.
In XP profiles are usually C:\Documents and
Settings\\Application

Confirming that I am receiving the same blank tab whenever I attempt to
search mail within Thunderbird.
