Found the problem.
When booting up the default value of
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_vidoe0/brightness is 0. I have updated my
/etc/rc.local and have added the following line before exit 0:
echo 5 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness.
Restarted, and it works :)

Hi Sebastien,
It looks like the plymouth portion is not invalid anymore, as soon as
lightdm starts the backlight switches off. Current version of lightdm is
lightdm_1.0.6-0ubuntu1.1_amd64.deb. I have attached the most recent logs
for lightdm. In x-0-greeter.log there are a few errors and warnings
The issue doesn't seem likely to be a gsd one, does it happen in non
gnome sessions? what login manager do you use?
