I suspect that you have old schema in directory:
/usr/local/share
Please try to rename `/usr/local/share` directory to `/usr/local/share-
back` and check if it helps

Thanks for the feedback. I had tried to uninstall Simple-Scan via Ubuntu
Software Center and then re-install. Since that didn't work, I followed the
directions to try and build it from source

What is the output of the command:

According to documentation:
