Further investigation reveals the problem is localised to 64 bit Ubuntu
- LibreOffice 3.5.5 on 32 bit Ubuntu does not have this problem.

I've also checked out LibreOffice 3.5.5 both 64 bit and 32 bit versions,
both of which suffer from the identical problem.

I should also add that I've tried running writer from the terminal, but
as the system freezes, it does not throwback an error (or at least an
error I can see).
