I have this same problem;
i'm using Thunderbird 17.0.6,
and i'm not using hotmail.
It is also not Ubuntu specific, as i'm using debian Wheezy.

Until very recently, having Nautilus open, I have been able to hit the forward
slash key on the keyboard ( '/' )
and this would commence the first character in a path location, within the text
