Raymond, I followed the advice given here:

to wit, add
blacklist i82975x_edac
to
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
It really did kill two birds with a stone: booting Ubuntu could take
several minutes and the sound was disabled, now bot
Public bug reported:
Sound was disabled after upgrading from 12.04. Today I did a clean 12.10
install, to no avail. The only device listed is "Dummy Output". Added
here some outputs that seem to be relevant:
For "aplay -l":
