xdg-open transmission-gtk.desktop
opens up a text editor instead of launching 'transmission'
It seems to work on xubuntu 17.10, though...

I just tried to use the ppa:mdeslaur/testing on ubuntu 12.04 (dont know
if it changes the behaviour for external monitor problem)
