i have the same problem with raring.
for me there seem to be at least 2 errors in the script:
in open_gnome the wrong variable is used to find the desktop file (browser
instead of desktop)
and in desktop_file_to_binary() the grep command finds multiple occurences of
'Exec'. The supposed patch
the bug seems to be independent of the other bug (gpu hangs). i
activated sna acceleration as pointed out in comment #75 of the other
bug, but the system crash happened again (while listening to internet
radio) without any gpu-hang in the logs.
After hard reset i found this in syslog:

If I deactivate the laptop display while using an external it seems to work
even in the higher resolution.
But it will always crash if I use both displays with their highest resolutions

This is also happening frequently when using lower resolution after a while
one user way of going around this problem is to use the NVIDIA X Server
Settings - in here it is possible to see the other screen as disabled,
here you can enable again :-)
