The latest update to xdg-desktop
I found out steam requires xdg-desktop-portal so I installed the old
version 1.6.0-1 and pinned it. (the problem version is 1.6.0-1ubuntu2)
This made steam happy again and did not show the syslog spam or CPU
overhead effects.

Of course, my apologies.
While i was researching the i noticed that i had a failed service
(systemctl --failed). The failed service was upower and when i tried to
restart/stop/disable it i was getting errors. The removal of the package
upower resulted to removal of gnome desktop. Reinstalling gnom
As it appears the problem persisted. The problem was in the upower
service and i managed to fix it by installing the file containing the
missing libusbmuxd.so.4 file from
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/libu/libusbmuxd/libusbmuxd4_1.0.10-2_amd64.deb

This continues to be an issue with Virt-Manager/QEMU with the 20200306
ISO of Ubuntu MATE and the 20200305 ISO of Ubuntu Budgie.
With VirtualBox 6.1.4 the following results occur:
1. Using VMSVGA there is no crash
2. Using VBoxSVGA the crash occurs.

Upgrade competes and reboots. Upon reboot login screen appears and there
is no prompt to login using fingerprint scanner.
After login using password the user needs to:
run fprintd-enroll and fingerprint

Just upgraded to Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS from Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.
In the POWER settings for blanking the display, there used to be several
options that allowed selecting a time interval of 1 hour, 2 hours, 4
hours, etc.

Word to the wise:
If you successfully compiled the driver, don't update your 18.04 system
to the HWE stack. The driver didn't seem to work with the kernel from
18.10
