Shortly after I logged in, I started a gnome-terminal with Ctrl-Alt-T. I was
surprised to see the message:

Somehow `/var/run/gdm` had the permissions changed to `711`. This causes
the greeter to fail, and shows a low-res screen with no Dash. `sudo
chmod 755 /run/gdm /run/gdm/greeter` fixed the problem for me, see

gnome-nettool as root, yet gnome-nettool has no way I can run it as root

the reverse order that I opened them. I should be able to click "Close"
in any of the Benchmark windows, and have the window close.
