The problem was solved, and I don't remember what I had to do to solve
it. At the moment I run Ubuntu 17.10 without issues.

If I click in a diolog box in Libreoffice, I get a black dialog screen flashing
followed by a crash. It goes back to the logon screen within a few seconds.
So if after a crash I click in any of the options to recover a document, it
crashes again.

I am having the same problem if I open a protected Libreoffice Writer
document. The system goes back to the login screen as soon as I enter a
password.

My mobile broadband also does not work. It is not visible. It used to
work on 14.04 on the same Dell E7440. Sim card is build in, so not in a
USB stick.
