If I recall correctly, that's a case which the condstore feature is supposed to cover. However, since the MailNews implementation is broken (see bug 885220 and bug 912216) I wouldn't be surprised if it's an issue prompted by that. I don't see this for non-Gmail servers which are not using condstore
