I have got this problem upgrading three machines from Ubuntu 14.04 to
14.10, two nVidia, one AMD. It's now not possible to log into the AMD
one - the desktop is missing and the system is frozen not responding to
anything. I have switched to XFCE on that machine and its working fine.

Subsequently had "waiting for network configuration" during boot, and no
network conection and no network manager after boot. Reinstalled
sendmail, restarted, and then purged the newly installed sendmail. Now

Oh.. I should add: It wasn't just that the network manager wasn't there
on boot, as in the bug title. If the network-manager service was
started, the network manager would appear, but pretty much every entry
in the drop-down would be greyed out, so no connections could be
established, such as wirel

I've just upgraded to Raring and noticed that the problem appears to be
even worse now. It happens whenever I try to close or minimise
Thunderbird. If I go to the ibus keyboard icon in the system tray and
click on it, the drop down menu is in a state of constant flickering.

I've attached a screenshot of top showing thunderbird and the ibus
python script hamming a couple of processors in tandem, with the
flashing unity panel and ibus-daemon not far behind. It's most annoying
and, when I have my virtual machine on too, my can't cope any longer and
freezes!

In my case I have a suspicion that it may be related to what appears to
be a bug in ibus that I have reported here:

When I minimise applications such as thunderbird and firefox, they
frequently sit in the unity launcher with the application icon and arrow
flickering and my computer becomes frozen for up to 5 mins. Checking
top shows me that compiz and a python script are both having a figh
With TB 17.0, and default setup on Quantal, when thunderbird maxes out
at 100% it also causes compiz to max out at 100% cpu - which freezes my
other applications too. Especially on my dual-core netbook that's a real
pain! I found that blocking of compiz can be avoided by turning off the
animations
