Just to let you know, my problem was a slight different message: "Failed to
start X Wayland: Wrong ownership for directory "/tmp/.X11-unix"
And the "/tmp/.X11-unix" directory had the right permissions.
Turns out the message is quite misleading in my case because the problem was
actually in "/tmp"
This isn't fixed on ubuntu 13.10 either. I have tried other distros and
none seems to recognize this touchpad or configure it correctly.

fixed by running: sudo aticonfig --initial

Brightness control not working after latest update
Still not working.
I can set the brightness level with brightness keys and in System Setting >
Brightness and Lock but the actual brightness level does not change - Ubuntu
12.04 LTS with all the latest updates
