I refreshed apt but there wasn't any update of mesa. So I enabled

GDM would try to start on Wayland. With proprietary Nvidia driver it
would then fallback to software rendering haence the CPU usage.

I tested it on my default install by enabling lowgfx through CCSM.
It did switch off all transparency effects. Also there are no preview
animations in Dash but I still have fade in and fade out animation for
showing windows (Super+W).

The #3 isn't relevant anymore because gedit is patched to disable CSD
(Client Side Decorations) on Unity.
However this patch doesn't work for point #2. So when you run gedit as
root you get it with CSD and this means no menus. And this affects menus
displayed on the panel and in the window titleba
