For me none of these fixes worked.
In my case alsa switched the speaker volume with the headphone volume.
If turned the headphone volume up, the speakers worked.
If i plug in headphones they will work as the

through a x2go desktop session.
Works fine on regular X termnal.

Just applied Timothy Pearson #15 (thank you Timothy)
