The only way I've found to restore it is by rebooting. I can control the
volume with amixer, and pavucontrol's per-application sliders work fine,
but the master in pavucontrol doesn't work. (So naturally the volume
keys don't work either.)

A variety of predefined keys used by unity cannot be rebound. (Super+t,
Super+w, pretty much anything used by Unity)
If the user tries to rebind the keys using the unity-control-center ->

I'm trying to run an app under Wine which had really distorted/echoey
sound. Toggling the configuration profile in Pulseaudio did fix it...
not sure if what I saw is a separate bug.
